Dunne quits to avoid 'awful concession speech'

From Morning Report, 7:17 am on 22 August 2017

United Future leader Peter Dunne has suddenly announced he's quitting Parliament, just a month out from election day.

He tells Susie Ferguson he woke up to the fact his heart wasn't that much in it, and he should allow the electorate to make a choice without him.

"After 30-odd years you want to retain your dignity, you want to have your head held high, and you want to leave on a positive note and I came to the conclusion that was far more appropriate."

He says he wanted to quit now rather than "make that awful concession speech on election night".

"I don't think it's a betrayal of National, I spoke to the Prime Minister yesterday, he understood my position."

He says he has no health problems, scandals or anything "looming", but the decision was based on his feeling it was time to go.
