More funding needed to match uptick in refugee numbers
Last year the National government did what governments for thirty years have declined to do and lifted the quota for refugees - from just 750 to 1000. As part of RNZ's "Is this the Brighter Future" our politcal reporter Mei Heron has been speaking to refugees who came to New Zealand in 2008. They've told her the uptick in numbers hasn't come with much needed extra support - and many are barely getting by.
