Mt Albert voters go to the polls on Saturday

Mt Albert voters go to the polls on Saturday to select a new MP to replace Labour's David Shearer.

National has chosen not to stand in the by-election for the safe Labour seat, which was held by Helen Clark before Mr Shearer.

Labour's candidate Jacinda Ardern looks set to easily retain the electorate for her party, and while the Greens have put up list MP Julie Anne Genter, she's hardly contesting the seat.

Instead, with an eye on this year's general election, the pair are working together to demonstrate how their respective parties can cooperate.

In terms of a contest of ideas for voters, the only real alternative comes in the form of Gareth Morgan's fledgling political vehicle The Opportunities Party.

Wellington based economist Geoff Simmons who works for Mr Morgan's firm Infometrics is the party's Mt Albert candidate.
