A landslide victory in the Mt Roskill by-election has given Labour a huge morale boost, with the party claiming the win will hurt National.

Michael Wood won Saturday's by-election with a margin of over 6,500 votes.

It's fourth time lucky for Mr Wood who has previously stood in Epsom, Botany and Pakuranga.

But as the country heads into election year, RNZs Poll of Polls shows about an 21-point gap between the two major parties, with National commanding a clear lead and pulling further away from its main rival.
