HMNZS Canterbury is due to arrive in Kaikoura at 9am with relief supplies for people stranded by Monday's earthquake.

Survey ship HMNZS Wellington, has reached Kaikoura and is assessing the seabed to ensure relief operations can go ahead safely.

American warship USS Sampson is on its way to New Zealand for an historic visit and heading straight to Kaikoura to help with the relief efforts.

Visiting warships from Canada and Australia are also travelling to the southern disaster zone.

The ships were meant to be entering the Waitemata harbour this morning for Navy celebrations this week but they will now join the New Zealand navy's relief efforts.
