Quake ousts family of 16 from home

From Morning Report, 6:17 am on 16 November 2016

As tourists are evacuated from the quake-hit, and currently land locked, town of Kaikoura its residents are preparing for a long hard cleanup.

In the gravel driveway outside Mark Solomon's Kaikoura house is a metre wide, half metre deep trench that runs into the garden and right down the side of his house, caused by the quake.

Out on Mount Fyffe Road, smaller cracks and lifted manholes have probably snapped the water main, draining out the town's water from its few reservoir tanks.

Mark Solomon, a cousin of his Ngai Tahu leader namesake, lives here with 15 members of his family four kilomtres from town, or used to.

Neither he nor his son, Eddie who's 15, want to go back.
