NCEA exams in most parts of the country will proceed.

However, for many schools there are building issues or problems with having to evacuate because of tsunami warnings.

Christine Kilkelly from the Qualification Authority says there are well-established processes in place to deal with it.

"Where students aren't able to sit today because of the availability of their school examination centre we have provisions for what we call an emergency derived grade, which we developed with the Christchurch earthquake."

This means the students' practice exam would suffice for their final grade.

"If for any reason the school had not held a practice exam then we would work with the school to develop a grade based on their assessment through the year."
