NZ response to Ukraine invasion must remain strong - Professor

The global community is condemning Russian leader Vladimir Putin for ordering his country's nuclear arms to be placed on high alert.

He says this is in response to NATO aggression.

But, the US says Putin is manufacturing threats against Russia - and this is an unnecessary escalation that could lead to disastrous consequences.

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian delegation will meet Russians on the border with Belarus for talks.

It's unclear what Russia's intentions are, but the Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, says seeking peace, while protecting every square inch of Ukraine, is his aim.

Earlier, Waikato University law professor Al Gillespie told Max Towle Putin's nuclear threat significantly increases global tensions.
