Govt's Covid-19 response laid bare in Waitangi Tribunal hearing

From Midday Report, 12:44 pm on 10 December 2021

A special Waitangi Tribunal hearing into the Government's response to Covid-19 is coming to an end - after a week of submitters saying Māori have been failed at nearly every stage of the pandemic.

The case has been brought by the Māori Council, which argues the vaccine rollout and the rushed move to the traffic light system has left Māori vulnerable.

They say that's a breach of the treaty. Yesterday, the Crown defended its response, saying equity has been a consideration at every step.

Māni Dunlop spoke with a senior law lecturer at Victoria University, Dr Carwyn Jones.
