Thousands of tonnes of protected corals damaged by fishing says Greenpeace

From Midday Report, 12:44 pm on 29 October 2021

New Zealand fishers hauled up to seven tonnes of coral to the surface in a single year, according to new data.

But recent science indicates what comes up in the net is not the whole scale of the damage.

The seven tonnes figure indicates up to 2400 tonnes of coral were destroyed on the seabed.

Greenpeace spokesperson Ellie Hooper talks to Māni Dunlop about the importance of preserving delicate ocean ecosystems.
