A kaupapa Māori aligned public holiday - Matariki - has first reading in Parliament

From Midday Report, 12:46 pm on 30 September 2021

For the first time - a kaupapa Māori aligned public holiday will have its initial reading in Parliament.

If passed, the first Matariki public holiday will be June 24th 2022 - but will shift each year according to the lunar calendar when the star cluster rises.

The Labour Party campaign promise has been criticised as another expense for businesses, but tohunga Rereata Makiha from the Matariki Advisory Committee told Māni Dunlop about the broader importance of this holiday.
