Canada goes to the polls

From Midday Report, 12:50 pm on 21 September 2021

Canadians have today headed to the polls to decide who should lead the country.

The Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the snap election, in a bid to increase the number of seats the Liberal Party (which he leads) holds in Parliament. If the Liberals can lead the government, it would be Trudeau's third term as Prime Minister.

But the latest polls suggest the result is far from certain - as many as six parties are in contention for seats in parliament.

Poll workers have started to count the votes, which suggest a high turnout, but the outcome may not be known until much later.
