Human Rights Commission will not consider use of te reo Māori as a complaint

From Midday Report, 12:17 pm on 17 September 2021

The Human Rights Commission will no longer consider complaints about the overuse of te reo Māori or anything relating to the term Pākehā.

The Broadcasting Standards Authority made a similar move earlier this year - stating that the use of te reo Māori on air was not in breach of broadcasting standards and would not accept complaints on the matter.

Today the Human Rights Commission says the Human Rights Act sets out what types of discrimination are unlawful and the use of te reo does not fit the criteria.

Māni Dunlop spoke to its chief executive, Rebecca Elvy.
