Justice advocate on overhaul and review of women's prisons

From Midday Report, 12:46 pm on 23 March 2021

There are calls to widen an urgent overhaul and review of the women's prison system to apply to all prisons and youth justice facilities. The Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis admitted his department got it wrong, following a judge's criticism of the cruel and inhumane treatment of an Auckland Women's Prison inmate. Manukau District Court judge David McNaughton said Corrections broke its own rules and regulations multiple times in its treatment of Mihi Bassett and her fellow inmate Karma Cripps, in what he termed a "concerted effort to break their spirit". Corrections has apologised. Justice advocate Julia Whaipooti speaks to Māni Dunlop.
