Concerns after high lead levels found in blood test results

From Midday Report, 12:13 pm on 18 February 2021

Blood tests have found unsafe levels of lead in some East Otago residents - including a number of children.

Almost 1,400 residents in and around Waikouaiti, Karitane and Hawksbury Village have been tested since traces of lead up to 40 times the acceptable level were found in their water supply.

Last night, the Southern DHB Medical Officer of Health, Dr Susan Jack, confirmed some results have come back above internationally recognised safe levels.

She will provide more detail to residents at a public meeting tomorrow night.

Toxicologist at Canterbury University, Ian Shaw, spoke to Mani Dunlop.
