Government to give $55 million for public interest journalism

From Midday Report, 12:43 pm on 12 February 2021

Struggling newsrooms are set to receive a boost with the establishment of an $55-million public interest journalism fund.

The fund was announced by the Minister for Broadcasting and Media Kris Faafoi at midday.

Mr Faafoi says he wants specific audiences, like Māori, Pasifika and ethnic media to receive a share of the money - but it's ultimately open to all media.

He told Meriana Johnsen it is a stopgap for a media market that's failing to provide a range of important stories.
