National needs assurances ambitious climate plans will work

From Midday Report, 12:11 pm on 1 February 2021

The National Party won't commit to bi-partisan support for the ambitious recommendations laid out by the Climate Change Commission in its official report on how New Zealand can reach its carbon emission reduction obligations.

Among the recommendations are changes to home building methods, a ban on petrol car imports and reducing livestock numbers by 15 percent.

National's climate change spokesperson, Stuart Smith, told Emma Hatton that he agrees large-scale, rapid change is needed now, but wants more information about the effectiveness of such policies on emissions, and how much it will all cost.
