High Court rules in favour of restoration on Mount Albert

From Midday Report, 12:15 pm on 23 December 2020

The High Court has ruled in support of the Tupuna Maunga Authority's restoration plan for Ōwairaka Mount Albert.

Since November, protestors have occupied the maunga to prevent the felling of 345 exotic trees to be replaced with 13,000 new native trees.

Honour the Maunga, the group leading the occupation, say that community consultation is required because the maunga is a reserve. However, this High Court found that settlement legislation overrides that requirement.

Paul Majurey is the Chair of Tupuna Maunga Authority.

He spoke to Meriana Johnson.
