A deal has been reached on the future of Ihumātao - with the government purchasing the disputed land in Tāmaki Makaurau from Fletchers for almost $30-million.
It's the first step in breaking the long-running deadlock.
A Memorandum of Understanding - He Pūmautanga - has been signed by the Kiingitanga - which represents mana whenua - the Crown and Auckland Council.
It states that the Crown's acquisition of the whenua will be for housing purposes, and a key clause stresses the agreement does not constitute a settlement of historical Treaty claims.
Kiingitanga spokersperson, Rukumoana Schaafhausen, spoke to Māni Dunlop.
