Police report people carrying starter pistols in Auckland

From Midday Report, 12:13 pm on 7 December 2020

The Police Acting Area Commander Scott Gemmell, says its concerning some people in Auckland felt it necessary to carry a handgun with them in town.

He said some people had even been found carrying starter pistols - like you'd see at an athletics competition.

Athletics Auckland said they no longer used starter pistols at their meets, instead opting for an electronic machine to start races, while a leading sports equipment provider in Auckland, Hart Sports, said they had stopped selling them.

Branch manager Ian Fata told our producer, Denise Garland, that most - if not all - athletics clubs and organisations used electronic means to start their races.
