Petition delivered to MP's to get rid of 'discriminatory' law

From Midday Report, 12:45 pm on 2 December 2020

Activists have delivered a petition to MPs urging them to get rid of legislation that enables referenda on Māori wards.

ActionStation collected more than 10-thousand signatures calling for Parliament to make the process of establishing Māori wards for district and regional councils the same as the process for establishing general wards.

Currently, council decisions in favour of Māori wards can be overturned under the Local Electoral Act if five percent of voters demand a poll.

The Director of ActionStation, Laura O'Connell Rapira, has been among those at Parliament delivering the petition and spoke to Māni Dunlop
