The Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, has described reports of prisoners being gassed in their cells by pepper spray at Auckland Women's prison as disturbing.
The government is asking for more information about conditions at the prison after RNZ revealed accounts of punitive treatment.
They include instances where two inmates, who were kept in a segregation unit for four months, were refused food unless they first lay face down on the ground.
Corrections says that practice is justified when the prisoner is a security risk.
Emilie Rakete from People Against Prisons Aotearoa spoke to Māni Dunlop about the revelations.
