That is one of the key recommendations from the second part of Judge Andrew Becroft's inquiry into the removal of Māori babies by Oranga Tamariki.

Judge Becroft is calling for a complete transfer of the Ministry's resources and power to Māori.

They are also calling on all removals of pēpi from hospitals and birthing units to stop.

Oranga Tamariki declined to be interviewed, but in a statement said it acknowledges the recommendations and the personal experiences shared, and will assess them.

Māni Dunlop spoke with the Children's Commissioner, Judge Andrew Becroft, and the Assistant Māori Commissioner, Glenis Philip-Barbara.
