Tourism Minister wants to stop targetting backpackers

The Tourism Minister, Stuart Nash says the Government is unashamedly seeking out high-value tourists to come to New Zealand, and will look to discourage backpacking and freedom camping in the process.

Mr Nash says he wants to ban overseas tourists from hiring vans that don't include toilets, and will focus tourism marketing on people with a high net worth.

But that's raised questions about what exactly makes a high-value tourist.

Māni Dunlop spoke to the Chair of the Backpacker Youth and Adventure Tourism Association, Jenni Powell and the General Manager of Haka Tours and ANZ Nature Tours, Eve Lawrence.
