Scientists say they are closing in on a vaccine for Covid-19 and, if it passes all clinical trials, it could reach New Zealanders not long into 2021.
The Government has welcomed clinical results from American drug company Pfizer which shows its vaccine appears to be more than 90 percent effective.
New Zealand has signed a deal to buy 1.5 million vaccines - enough for 750,000 people - subject to it passing all trials and being approved by Medsafe.
The Research, Science and Innovation Minister Megan Woods told Māni Dunlop the trial results provide reason for hope.
