Wellington council to consider giving mana whenua pay, voting rights

From Midday Report, 12:57 pm on 8 October 2020

A move to pay and give voting rights to mana whenua sitting on Wellington City Council committees is a step closer.

Representatives from two Wellington groups - Ngāti Toa Rangatira and Taranaki Whānui - sit on council committees but are unpaid and unable to vote.

A councillor, Jill Day, called for an investigation on giving mana whenua voting rights and remuneration.

The council has been meeting this morning and councillor Tamatha Paul spoke to Māni Dunlop about the decision.
