The family of a New Zealander who was on a cattle ship that sunk in the East China sea say they're devastated the search has been called off.

Scott Harris from Palmerston North and Southland man Lochie Bellerby were on board the ship along with 41 other crew when it capsized during a typhoon.

The Japan Coast Guard have been searching for survivors since the ship sent a distress signal eight days ago.

Māni Dunlop spoke with the Foreign Minister, Winston Peters.
