Police criticised over arrest, led to man's death in custody

From Midday Report, 12:17 pm on 27 August 2020

The police have been criticised for multiple failures which led to the death of a man in custody in 2018.

Alo Ngata, who was 29-years-old, had violently assaulted a stranger in Auckland's Freeman's Bay, and strongly resisted arrest.

He died after losing consciousness in his cell.

Police accepted that officers should have been monitoring Mr Ngata, however, they pointed to the extraordinary situation staff faced, with a highly agitated and violent detainee.

Māni Dunlop spoke to the Chair of the Independent Police Conduct Authority, Judge Colin Doherty.
