Higgins fined $270,000 over road worker deaths

The road contractor Higgins has been fined $270,000 and ordered to pay reparations of almost $500,000 over a crash that left three of its road workers dead.

An investigation by Worksafe found that failings by Higgins Contracting led to the deaths of Dudley Sole Raroa, David Reginald Te Wira Eparaima and Haki Graham Hiha in the Bay of Plenty last year.

Maurice Davis is the National Secretary of the Amalgamated Workers' Union, which represents road workers,.
