Iwi takes over water testing duties from Council

From Midday Report, 12:44 pm on 3 August 2020

In a first - an iwi has taken over some functions from a council.

The Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board will begin scrutinising the water in the Lake Taupō catchment from next month - something the Waikato Regional Council has been doing until now.

It's the first time section 33 of the Resource Management Act has been implemented, in the three decades the option has existed.

The Trust's chief executive Shane Heremaia spoke to Māni Dunlop.
