Little: Repealing three strikes not a priority for Labour

From Midday Report, 12:15 pm on 17 July 2020

The Justice Minister, Andrew Little, says Labour doesn't plan to repeal the three strikes law anytime soon.

The Court of Appeal this week ruled it cannot overturn a seven-year prison sentence for a mentally ill man who kissed a stranger on Wellington's Cuba Street in 2016.

The offence would not normally have lead to a jail term, but it was the man's third strike.

The Justice Minister, Andrew Little, had originally hoped to have the law overturned by the end of 2018.

But he told Māni Dunlop it's now not a priority.
