Pohutukawa and Matariki

From Midday Report, 12:59 pm on 13 July 2020

And today markes the rise of Matariki and every day this week we will be giving you a quick explanation of the nine stars in the cluster.

We start with Pohutukawa and Matariki -

Tērā a Pōhutukawa ka mōiri ki runga he pae whakamahara mō aku tau kahurangi kua ngaro.

Pōhutukawa is the star connected to those that have passed on - so when this star is acknowledged it is a time to reflect on our loved ones who have died since the last Matariki and to wish them well on their journey.

Then to the actual star in the cluster - Matariki!

Matariki tāpuapua. Matariki nāna i ao ake te kai ki runga. Matariki hunga nui. Matariki ahunga nui.

Matariki is the star that signifies reflection, hope, our connection to the environment and the gathering of people. Matariki is also connected to the health and wellbeing of people.
