Matariki celebrations begin this weekend

From Midday Report, 12:47 pm on 10 July 2020

This weekend will see the start of Matariki events around the country.

Matariki - otherwise known as Pleaides - signals the Maori new year.

And although the constellation can be seen at the moment, for most iwi celebration of the new year starts in the lunar phase in the Maramataka of Tangaroa - which is three to four days leading to the new moon.

This year it starts on Monday.

Events are being run around the country to celebrate - and Māni Dunlop spoke Helen Brooks about the events at Porirua's Te Rauparaha arena.
