A Hawaiian cloak and hat gifted to Captain Cook will stay in their homeland, after Te Papa gifted them to Hawaii.
The ʻahu ʻula and mahiole were given to Cook in 1779 and have been in the collection of Te Papa since 1912.
The taonga were returned to Bishop Museum in Hawai'i on loan and today it's confirmed that will remain in perpetuity.
Te Papa Tongarewa kaihautū, Dr Arapata Hakiwai, spoke to Māni Dunlop about the items.
