It will become illegal to sell moa bones and those of other extinct species if a proposal to increase protections becomes law.
Conservation minister Eugenie Sage has released a discussion document today to strengthen regulations and increase their protection.
Since 2010 there have been more than 350 cases of moa bones and egg shells being put up for sale, many from protected sites.
Ms Sage spoke to Māni Dunlop about the porposal.
