Astronomer first Māori to win PM Science Prize

For the first time, one of the country's top science awards has been awarded to a Māori.

Prizes worth $1 million were handed out at the virtual Prime Minister's Science Prizes yesterday - an event that originated more than a decade ago.

Tūhoe astronomer, Professor Rangi Matamua, was awarded the top Communication Prize for his work around the revitalisation and reclamation of knowledge of our stars. 

He spoke to Māni Dunlop about his journe.
