Mother not fully satisfied with police apology

From Midday Report, 12:18 pm on 9 June 2020

The police have apologised to the whānau of a 16-year-old boy from Masterton, who was arrested last year because he matched the description of a suspect who robbed a gas station.

Peter Hing had just finished playing basketball with friends at Makoura College, when several officers approached, pushing him against the school fence and handcuffing him.

The apology has come a year after his mother - Liz Hing - filed a complaint with the IPCA.

Te Aniwa Hurihanganui spoke to Ms Hing, who said the arrests occurred when Peter and his friends stepped outside the gym because they heard police sirens.
