Women's Refuge concerned worst is yet to come in covid crisis

From Midday Report, 12:11 pm on 30 April 2020

New Zealand's MPs have been warned the worst is yet to come, with regards to the social and mental distress inflicted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

That was the message presented to the Epidemic Response Committee this morning by one of the country's top science advisors, Sir Peter Gluckman.

Meanwhile, the Collective of Women's Refuges in New Zealand said they were anticipating a spike in family violence as the emotional stresses, loss of employment and increased poverty due to Covid-19 grow in the coming months.

Speaking to the Committee today the chief executive of Women's Refuge New Zealand, Ang Jury, said she hadn't seen an increase in demand for their services during lockdown.

Dr Jury speaks to Māni Dunlop.
