In the last hour of our Matariki Special we crossed to Te Rohe o te Tara ika, Porirua now to where Ngati Toa Rangatira has led the hautapu ceremony this morning.
Kahu o Te Rangi Ropata is the Pou Tikanga Reo, the resident expert in all things Maori for the iwi and he joined us to fill us in on the morning's events and to explain the origins of the famous haka 'Ka mate, Ka mate' - first composed at Lake Rotoaira, just north of the host marae for this year's hautapu ceremony.
