At the top of the South Island residents are in clean up mode with flooding, slips and washouts causing widespread damage across the Nelson and Tasman area.
In Nelson hundreds of people are still not sure when they'll be allowed back home.
Those who have been able to stay haven't escaped the damage either.
The ground floor of Nelson couple Barbara and Alistair Lawson's home has been flooded, forcing them and their 17 year old son upstairs to wait for the water to subside.
