Bilbies implanted with poison for feral cats

Bilbies are one of Australia's most iconic native animals but they're on the verge of extinction due to an abundance of feral cats preying upon them. In a bid to find a solution, University of South Australia PHD Candidate Kyle Brewer developed Population Protecting Implants (PPI) which is a poisonous implant fitted into the bilbies. 30 bilbies at Arid Recovery have had the small rice-sized implant injected under their skin. They are lethal to feral cats but not to bilbies due to a specialised coating, and the marsupials' natural resistance to the toxin. Developer Kyle Brewer explains how he came up with the idea.
