Mummified dog discovered in Rawene

From Lately, 10:45 am on 7 July 2020

Heritage restorers in the Hokianga town of Rawene made a startling discovery when restoring a former Weslyan Church. The mummified corpse of a dog surfaced, with a collar and dog tags intact.

As well as being a grisly sight, the mummy is a reminder of an often forgotten regional conflict in the Hokianga at the end of the 19th century.

Bill Edwards is the Northland Area Manager for Heritage New Zealand and is involved in the restoration of the Church.
