Waitomo Gas launches in Wellington

From Lately, 10:30 pm on 2 July 2019

Wellington motorists have been lining up  to fill up their tanks at the capital's newest petrol station. The Hamilton-based Waitomo group opened a new station in Thorndon today, and for the next 48 hours unleaded 91 will be selling for $1.86 a litre, more than 30 cents less than the average price in town.

The Commerce Commission is looking at whether petrol companies are inflating prices in areas to subsidise charging lower prices elsewhere, and previous studies have shown that an obvious driver is the presence of cut-price retailers in some regions driving down the pump price. Karyn asks Waitomo's Jimmy Ormsby if he's comfortable being called a cut-price retailer?
