New laws proposed for sexual violence cases

From Lately, 10:20 pm on 2 July 2019

The government wants to change the law  so that victims in sexual violence cases may not have to appear in a court room at all.

Under the changes, victims would have the right to choose whether they give their evidence in the witness box or by audio-visual link, or pre-recorded video, and Parliamentary Under-Secretary to the Justice Minister, Jan Logie, says lawyers would be restricted from asking unnecessary and distressing questions.

HELP has been Auckland's specialist provider of sexual abuse support services since 1982 and its Executive Director Kathryn McPhillips joins us to talk about the impact of these changes.
