An empty house - one of the three hundred thousand homes abandoned because of the recession in Ireland

In this programme:

Until the global recession struck Ireland was held up as a shining example of how to run a successful modern economy.

But it has fallen harder than most during the global recession and last month it was forced to seek tens of billions of dollars from the IMF and the EU to keep its economy afloat.

Economics Correspondent, Nigel Stirling, lived in Ireland during the height of the Celtic Tiger boom. Before this latest crisis hit, he travelled back there to investigate what's gone wrong and what lessons there are for New Zealand.

First broadcast on March 21st 2010
