Don McGlashan shares his love of water and poetry as our National Library turns 60

"Anchor me, in the middle of your deep blue sea," sings Don McGlashan in one of his most beloved songs.

McGlashan has, as a songwriter and sailor, been deeply influenced by bodies of water - rivers, lakes, inlets and seas - his whole life. He has long, to quote another of his most famous songs, bathed in the river.

On Thursday evening November 6 McGlashan will use this influence to talk about his songwriting, as he gives this year's Lilburn lecture in Pōneke Wellington. It's part of a series of events marking the National Library's 60th birthday.

Despite spending much of his time these days living in water-surrounded Vancouver, 2025 sees Don McGlashan more present than ever in Aotearoa through media. He's recently released his first live album, with collaborator Anita Clark Take it to the Bridge and Shirley Horrocks documentary Anchor Me: the Don McGlashan Story recently premiered in the Whanau Marama New Zealand International Film Festival. It sees general release January 16.

We've been celebrating Don, so now it's time for Don to celebrate others: he joins us for 'Fast Favourites'.
