In 2019 preeminent and popular New Zealand classical pianist Michael Houston announced his retirement. Yet, with the disruption of Covid, things didn't turn out that way. At all. Six years on he continues to play and record.
Last weekend he did both at Ōtautahi Christchurch venue The Piano, and in October he will perform what he calls a series of difficult works for piano at At The World's Edge Festival in Queenstown, October 4-17. He will perform in no less than six concerts.
That's before he gets ready to perform Mozart's dramatic Concerto in D minor with the Manukau Symphony Orchestra in November.
We invited Michael to join us to play Fast Favourites. We discussed the CD, the closure of Marbeck's physical store, Rattle Records and John Psathas, among many other things.
