This year road tacks were thrown into the path of Tour De France riders in Europe, to much cyclist concern. Then, last month here in Pōneke artist and keen biker Marcus McShane’s reaction to similar tactics on new cycle lanes gained widespread media attention: McShane attached a broom to the front of his cargo bike to sweep his way to a puncture-free commute.

Doing unusual things on a bike has long been part of the artist, writer and lighting designer’s innovative practise - exploring more sustainable human-powered ways to create art

Earlier this year Marcus’s Nag (a bicycle self-powered artist studio he has toured extensively) and 5ever Books staged a temporary publishing house at various arts festivals. The public were invited to write, edit, draw, print, or pedal to help produce a series of unique books, created entirely with human energy. Everything from record players to the lighting systems of galleries have been dependent on McShane and volunteers’ pedalling power.

Well known for his theatre lighting design work (his latest show is Circa Theatre’s Christmas pantomime Treasure Island (on until 20 January), McShane’s latest experiment is to work with Urban Dream Brokerage to employ his cargo bike as a mobile video projection unit, screening commissioned audiovisual animation onto the upper floors of Cuba Street buildings as he cycles along, with the film designed to work in rhythm with his bike.

Velocine will be performed Thursday November 23 to Saturday November 25 from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. The public are welcome to join him on bike, or walk.
