Fencing contractor James Ewing has two years of work ahead of him at Lees Valley Station in North Canterbury.
He was erecting a deer fence along the valley road when Cosmo Kentish-Barnes stopped for a chat.
Nearby, digger driver Daniel "Horse" Wycliffe repairs a damaged bridge.
Farm manager Michael Whyte says the June flood event washed out the approaches to three bridges in the valley.
