Cam and Melissa Booker grow the A-to-Z of vegetables in their 10-hectare market garden at Sefton in North Canterbury.

"You could almost say we start with asparagus and finish with zucchinis," Cam says.

The Bookers grow more than 30 varieties of fruit and vegetables.

All of the produce, as well as apples and pears from the family orchard in Motueka, is sold at five local farmers' markets and via Grown – the couple's increasingly popular vege box business.

Facebook has become an important tool for promoting the Grown vege boxes and engaging with customers, Cam says, and some of their posts have reached more than 20,000 people, Cam says.

"In the space of a couple of weeks and after a couple of Facebook posts, we went from 20 to 30 boxes a week to 70, to 80.  It completely changed our business."

The Bookers employs three full-time staff, one part-timer and another four or five people to run the Farmer's Market stalls.

On Christmas Eve, the couple host the Sefton Christmas Harvest Market when up to 3,000 people descend on their property to buy local produce, pick peas and dig potatoes for the festive season.
